This thesis examines the life and legacy of Sayyidah Fatima bint Muhammad, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, to challenge prevailing misconceptions about female agency in Islamic societies, particularly within the Sunni tradition. Despite Fatima’s widely revered status, her life and contributions have often been overshadowed or misinterpreted, both by Western Orientalist scholarship and through the cultural practices of some Muslim societies. Through a detailed exploration of Fatima’s spiritual, social, and familial roles, this study reveals her as a powerful exemplar of female leadership, resilience, and piety. It addresses how Fatima’s life reshapes paradigms related to gender dynamics, social class, lineage, and race, offering a compelling model of female agency rooted in Islamic values. By highlighting Fatima’s education, public service, advocacy, and unwavering moral stance, the research demonstrates her enduring influence as a guiding figure for Muslim women today. This work seeks to provide a clearer framework within the Sunni tradition, empowering Muslim communities to recognize and reclaim the authentic representation of women’s roles and contributions in Islam, inspired by the legacy of Fatima bint Muhammad.
