Abstract
  • White Christian nationalism (WCN) as always been an under current in American society, at times it is more overt and others more covert. While its long history has indeed shaped our identity as a nation, there are those who desire that it be reasserted as the dominant force in developing our 21st century character. White Christian nationalists (WCN) seek to influence national leaders in declaring that this is a "Christian nation," putting their religion above all others. Indeed, they argue this has always been the case but have concerns about the ways in which the numbers of their group(s) are dwindling. Since at least the 1950s, membership in the nation's leading Protestant denomination has been in gradual decline while attendance at all the other mainstream churches is waning. As a result of immigration, for which WCNs blame the Jews, demographics are shifting to the point of having an impact on the composition of the electorate. White Christian nationalists no longer hold sway over most voters, a change that has occurred since the early 1990s, and as a result they have sought someone to blame. Anti-Semitism has long been a part of Christian church history where Jews have been blamed for such events as The Bubonic Plague, Germany's defeat in World War I and its result, the Weimar Republic. With the increase of immigrants from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, WCNs have reacted against this expansion of the American Dream to anyone who is not white. And, who better to blame than the Jews who have reached out to humanity in efforts to "repair the world" by establishing organizations to help resettle refugees. Thus, the topic of this thesis is important today was WCN spreads and provides an opportunity to examine why white Christians believe they are superior to people of other races and religions and why they engage in acts of rhetorical and physical violence against those they believe deserve less. In fact, how can they believe themselves to be superior to any other group or individual if they believe in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth? This thesis will address these questions and more.
