- Abstract
- This paper explores nature as a major theme of the Quran and principles that explain the what, why and how of Islamically-based environmental ethics (eco-Islam) and action (eco-jihad). It reintroduces today's audience to Sayyed Hossein Nasr's argument that the environmental crisis is a symptom of humanity's spiritual crisis is due to the destruction and subjugation of nature as a consequence of human kind's estranged relationship with God. Nasr's solution to this spiritual crisis is to reconnect with the sacredness of nature and, ultimately, resuscitate a relationship with the Creator. Finally, it considers the agricultural model of Muslim Spain as a blueprint for humanity to grow, thrive and live in harmony with the natural world.
