  • The importance of a spiritual identity is critical to a person’s well-being, yet surprisingly few theories of self-identity consider how a person’s particular faith tradition influences spiritual identity. This thesis examines how a Christian/Christ-follower identity is formed, by expanding on an existing theistic model of spiritual identity development and a contemporary psychological model of autobiographical consciousness that describes the importance of language acquisition on an emerging sense of self. I make an argument that spiritual identity develops through exposure to sacred texts and faith practices, and more importantly the language and vocabulary that comprise them. Sacred texts contain language that forms a particular narrative about who a Christ-follower is, and what it means to be a Christ-follower and create the narrative structure. around which a person can form their own Christ-follower/Christian spiritual identity.
