Metaphysical frameworks that are inconsistent with this contention are often rooted in essentialist ideology, whereas those that accommodate it are by and large labeled as existentialist. But how does performativity, a theory lauded as an unadulterated existentialist one, stand up against a rigorous investigation for coherence? This paper argues that upon its analysis in formal terms and the parsing of its assumptions, implications, and extrapolations, the theory fails to retain its strength and coherence. A surprising solution utilizing Edward Zalta’s unconventional characterization of modal essentialism is proposed. The persistent emphasis on the novelty of these conversions has kept Latino Muslims on the margins despite their longstanding and active roles within Islamic communities in the United States, reducing them to mere statistics in a growing movement. The result has been a gap in scholarly research on their experiences beyond the initial stages of conversion. Grounded on Rambo’s Seven-Stage Model of Religious Conversion, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to examine the evolution, leadership, and activism of Generation X (Gen X) – born between 1965 and 1980 – and early millennials or Xennials – born between the years 1981 and 1985 – who converted to Islam just before or after 9/11, focusing on their established presence and impact in their community roles and beyond.  Through a critical analysis of existing literature, case study, and semi-structured interviews with ten Latino Muslim participants, I determined that Gen X and Xennial Latino Muslim converts have successfully navigated dual identities, leadership, and Islamophobia while integrating into the broader Muslim community. Drawing on the work of 20th century philosopher Jacques Derrida and the biblical retellings of the Lord’s Supper, this thesis argues for the pressing need to reassess and reimagine the transformative power and undeniable call of hospitality for Christian communities. By cultivating a deeper understanding and developing a framework for more conversation around how hospitality ought to be lived out in Christian communities, there is hope for the creation of a collective pursuit of justice, love, and holiness. Through this exploration, it becomes evident that hospitality beckons Christians to answer the powerful call of Christlikeness by radically caring for and making room for those historically categorized as “the Other.” This recognition invites Christian communities to take the first step by engaging in open dialogue, reexamine past practices, and find new ways to better embrace hospitality in their specific context. This paper uses Muñoz’s theory, in conjunction with the work of historians of evangelicalism and theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, to demonstrate how the Evangelical Right is able to engage with the theological call to be “in the world, but not of the world” by perceiving itself as a marginalized subculture. The Evangelical Right developed in the late 1970s as evangelicals in the United States began to shift from a philosophy of fundamentalist separatism towards explicitly political activism by disidentifying with mainstream culture, working to engage with it and reform it for their own purposes. In making the parallels between Muñoz’s disidentification and evangelical history explicit, this paper argues that the methodological tools of queer theory offer a new frame for understanding the emergence of the Evangelical Right. Their secular framework, however, fails to address the holistic needs of Muslim populations. This study aims to map the theoretical framework for a religiously integrated relapse prevention model incorporating the psycho-spiritual insights of 14th-century polymath Ibn Taymiyyah, particularly his unique views on the fiṭrah and its role in cultivating experiential awareness (ma‘rifah). By analyzing areas of convergence and divergence between MBRP and Taymiyyan thought, this research reframes mindfulness not solely as a tool for psychological stability but as a pathway to restoring the corrupted fiṭrah for sustainable recovery. The integration of evidence-based cognitive behavioral strategies with Taymiyyan notions of God-centered mindfulness establishes a foundation for interventions that are both clinically effective and grounded in scripturalist Islamic scholarship. Over the past three years, I have intentionally crafted sermons to further the maturity and dialogue within my target congregation in Kansas City, Missouri. These experiences of preparing and preaching sermons in an intercultural setting have shown how challenging this can be. \r\nThis structured investigation seeks to evaluate and interrogate the challenges of preaching in an intercultural congregation, test preaching strategies to best reach all persons and encourage healthy and just interactions between diverse groups. The inquiry includes preaching project sermons and analyzing questionnaires responses. \r\nMy inquiry has yielded a process of awareness, contemplation, and designed response that can be used by preachers in diverse environments such as multicultural and intercultural congregations. The scholars S.N. al-Attas, Wael Hallaq and Umar Farouq Abd-Allah have answered this question by stating that the principal essence of Islam is its ethico-moral system, which informs humanity of its identity as God’s moral subjects by instilling within them the prophetic ethic. Yet Islam’s identity formation, which is meant to protect the human fitra, i.e. the primordial human state, and is a foundation of its educational paradigm and ethical philosophy, is interrupted by the rise of the modern nation state through its refashioning of the human self and its use of secularism as a medium to make citizenship the primary principle of identity.1 This article contends that due to the traumatic social and psychological effects of the modern nation state and colonialism upon the Muslim collective consciousness and religious identity, restoration of Islamic education must take place through holistic means. Achieving the ethical aims of Islamic education must come through reclaiming the Islamic identity, rerooting its pedagogy in the Qur’anic worldview, reviving traditional spiritual orthopraxy and utilizing relevant psychological research to integrate contemporary psychological models aimed at identity development and healing. It is a call to resurrect Traditional African Spirituality as an authentic spiritual construct and a retelling of religious history to dispel the myth that it is not worthy of academic study.  This thesis provides valuable insights into the problem of identity and perception that has caused theological institutions to evade African Theology—perceived as unacceptable and unappealing—thus preventing it from crossing academic boundaries as a field of study worthy of research, ministry, and scholarship.  This work advocates for the Chicago Theological Seminary to engage in radical intellectual transformation by extending the borders of Religious Studies beyond Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and, more recently, Buddhism and Hinduism to include Traditional African Spirituality as a serious academic field of study.  It presents ten successful African Spirituality programs across the United States offered at higher-learning institutions.  It also presents a high-level analysis of alternatives (an analytical comparison tool) that uses adjectival rating rationale against evaluation criteria to assess the viability and benefits of implementing Traditional African Spirituality as a new discipline.  This assessment projects that implementing Traditional African Spirituality will exceed performance expectations and revolutionize the study of theology at the Chicago Theological Seminary.  This research proves that it is time to remove the stigma and allow African Theology to cross academic borders. Biblical literacy is declining which means that engagement from a place of faith in the public sphere is also declining. This risks scripture being misinterpreted in public spaces and leaves us without an engaged biblically literate audience with the skills to push back. This paper argues that narrative preaching is the most effective model of preaching to a modern audience to engage them. The listeners must be engaged to listen, hear and then embody the stories of our faith. Teaching the Bible in the preaching moment is the most effective way to increase biblical literacy in our congregations.
