Louis-Marie Chauvet developed a Eucharistic theology informed by Martin Heidegger’s linguistic turn in philosophy and Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalysis. Chauvet describes the Eucharist as a form of symbolic exchange and central to the creation of Christian identity. This thesis demonstrates compatibility between Chauvet and sodomitical theology on the effects of sin and concern for the other, yet a queer critique of Chauvet’s Eucharistic theology identifies elided patriarchal and heterosexist dynamics in his account and inattention to the “structural queer.” Critiques of Tonstad’s theology are engaged, and suggestions for future research are provided."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/b0596ffe-f31b-4a9a-893b-c5ab3df6ba47?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["b0596ffe-f31b-4a9a-893b-c5ab3df6ba47"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["b0596ffe-f31b-4a9a-893b-c5ab3df6ba47"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["jacob.may@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1862476728375443456,"timestamp":"2026-04-14T19:50:20.756Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T01:33:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:45:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aa4978c1-5e9d-459d-9948-e57baa7068bf","accessControl_ssim":["8643f01a-724b-44bd-a46e-a4dce3ee7b71"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["1a8aaf77-5eff-4127-938d-84f35ee1b862"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["1a8aaf77-5eff-4127-938d-84f35ee1b862"],"depositor_ssim":["irum.maharaj@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["irum.maharaj@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Al-Zāhir wa Al-Bātin--The Manifest and the Hidden: A Response to J. If people fail to believe in God through no fault of their own, then God must provide evidence in the form of belief to anyone open to believing. Schellenberg assumes that belief in God is involuntary. I examine Schellenberg’s claims from the perspective of Kalām theology (Islamic Rational Theology). I argue that the God of theism is dissimilar to creation and must be understood using reason and revelation. While he explored visual art from a variety of historical periods, Tillich did not explore the major mid-twentieth century art movement called Abstract Expressionism. Tillich’s approach to the theology of art, particularly from a Christian existentialist perspective, works well with the paintings of a key Abstract Expressionist like Barnett Newman whose life and work paralleled that of Paul Tillich. Due to changes in the practices of contemporary painters such as producing written reflections on their own and their fellow artists’ work, today’s theologian of art needs to consider this additional material rather than a single visual work of art taken in isolation. Artists’ statements and writings, the writing of contemporary critics, as well as that of art historians present theologians an expanded body of material to investigate theologically. This thesis applies such an expanded theological approach to Newman’s painting series Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/0155cee1-d5f3-4d4d-8fec-4440744fb680?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["0155cee1-d5f3-4d4d-8fec-4440744fb680"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["STM Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["34135175-3608-4237-8811-b1102c4ceff1"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["0155cee1-d5f3-4d4d-8fec-4440744fb680"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["edwin.greenlee@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1797152333848641536,"timestamp":"2024-04-23T18:47:03.460Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Thesis","hits":3,"label":"Thesis"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Greenlee, Edwin J.","hits":1,"label":"Greenlee, Edwin J."},{"value":"Irum Ayub Maharaj","hits":1,"label":"Irum Ayub Maharaj"},{"value":"May, Jacob","hits":1,"label":"May, Jacob"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Abstract Expressionism","hits":1,"label":"Abstract Expressionism"},{"value":"Existentialism","hits":1,"label":"Existentialism"},{"value":"Hiddenness","hits":1,"label":"Hiddenness"},{"value":"Kalam Theology","hits":1,"label":"Kalam Theology"},{"value":"Method of Correlation","hits":1,"label":"Method of Correlation"},{"value":"Newman, Barnett","hits":1,"label":"Newman, Barnett"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology","hits":3,"label":"Theology"},{"value":"Christianity","hits":1,"label":"Christianity"},{"value":"Queer Theology","hits":1,"label":"Queer Theology"},{"value":"Queer Theory","hits":1,"label":"Queer Theory"},{"value":"Sacraments","hits":1,"label":"Sacraments"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":3,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2024","hits":2,"label":"2024"},{"value":"2026","hits":1,"label":"2026"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Master's Theses","hits":2,"label":"Master's Theses"},{"value":"STM Theses","hits":1,"label":"STM Theses"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Master of Arts","hits":2,"label":"Master of Arts"},{"value":"Master of Sacred Theology","hits":1,"label":"Master of Sacred Theology"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[{"value":"Islamic Studies","hits":1,"label":"Islamic Studies"}],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Chicago Theological Seminary","hits":3,"label":"Chicago Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[{"value":"Bayan Islamic Graduate School","hits":1,"label":"Bayan Islamic Graduate School"}],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Chicago Theological Seminary","hits":3,"label":"Chicago Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":3,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
