Both rabbinic literature and early Islamic jurisprudence deploy similar rhetorical strategies to justify exemption from ritual obligations based on gender. In response, Jewish and Muslim feminists have utilized similar methodological approaches to reinterpret rulings on ritual obligation to empower women and LGBTQ people. Yet existing methods of religious feminist interpretation fail to consider whether utilizing liberal feminist theory can elicit change. As such, this dissertation harnesses decolonial feminism and queer of color critique to advance a method of legal interpretation that reconceptualizes the obligated subject in Jewish and Islamic law while foregrounding the relationship between gender, ritual obligation, and public religious space."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/ed201946-4c07-468d-9219-b3a273df68fa?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["ed201946-4c07-468d-9219-b3a273df68fa"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["PhD Dissertations"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["ecd30fb9-8e3a-4cbc-8acc-ebda4d673d16"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["ed201946-4c07-468d-9219-b3a273df68fa"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["zaynab.shahar@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1797156867020947456,"timestamp":"2024-04-23T19:59:06.631Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Dissertation","hits":1,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Zaynab Shahar","hits":1,"label":"Zaynab Shahar"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Feminist Jurisprudence","hits":1,"label":"Feminist Jurisprudence"},{"value":"Islamic Law ","hits":1,"label":"Islamic Law "},{"value":"Jewish Law ","hits":1,"label":"Jewish Law "},{"value":"Philosophy of Religion","hits":1,"label":"Philosophy of Religion"},{"value":"Queer Phenomenology","hits":1,"label":"Queer Phenomenology"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Feminist Theory","hits":1,"label":"Feminist Theory"},{"value":"Islam","hits":1,"label":"Islam"},{"value":"Judaism","hits":1,"label":"Judaism"},{"value":"Philosophy","hits":1,"label":"Philosophy"},{"value":"Ritual","hits":1,"label":"Ritual"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":1,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2024","hits":1,"label":"2024"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"PhD Dissertations","hits":1,"label":"PhD Dissertations"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Doctor of Philosophy","hits":1,"label":"Doctor of Philosophy"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Chicago Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Chicago Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Chicago Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Chicago Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":1,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
