Inclusion is the active, ongoing, and intentional practice of incorporating all people into the life of the church. First Congregational Church of Anchorage is a member of the Open and Affirming coalition; but are they as inclusive as they claim to be. This ethnographic case study of First Congregational Church of Anchorage utilizes a congregation-wide survey, semi-structured interviews, and auto-ethnographic reflection to assess the congregation’s inclusion of queer people of faith. This research provides a rubric for assessing a congregation’s practices of inclusion grounded in Alfred Adler’s Gemeinschaftsgefühl.\r\nFocusing on democracy, community, and belonging, this research determines the three lived values of FCCAK; exposing the tension of being an Open and Affirming congregation that allows homophobia in their community. Louis-Marie Chauvet developed a Eucharistic theology informed by Martin Heidegger’s linguistic turn in philosophy and Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalysis. Chauvet describes the Eucharist as a form of symbolic exchange and central to the creation of Christian identity. Song of Solomon"],"abstract_tesim":["As ecological and animal hermeneutics have contributed much to the field of biblical studies recently, less attention has been paid to the Song of Songs. This dissertation examines the nonhuman animal imagery of the Song alongside both biblical scholarship and animal studies. It argues that the Song presents human sexuality as a part of nonhuman animal sexuality, a shared field of experience rather than a superior human domain over an inferior animal domain. In addition, this common experience of sexuality across human and nonhuman animals has the effect of blurring the lines between species, making it unclear where the human ends and the animal begins. The dissertation works through the Song’s animals group by group, beginning with wild herbivores, then domesticated herbivores, then predatory mammals, and finally birds, showing how the love poetry of the Song can be read in ways that question the human/animal binary. This thesis challenges dominant narratives that assume that queer folk either abandon religion or escape to urban centers. Drawing heavily from qualitative data obtained from surveying and interviewing 12 queer Christians with lived experience within rural contexts, this study reveals how faith is sustained, reimagined, and reinterpreted despite exclusion, spiritual trauma, and in many cases limited access to affirming communities. Integrating queer and liberation theology as well as sociological analysis of rural religious and social contexts, this project emphasizes lived experience as a source of theological wisdom. The respondents speak to enduring relationships with God, separating divine constancy with failure of the religious institution, and engaging in reinterpretations through a queer lens that is rooted in love, justice, grace, and Jesus’ message.\r\n\r\nThe findings shine a light on how rural dynamics, especially the heightened visibility, social policing, and the centralized role of the church as a community institution, increase both the risks of exclusion but also speak to the transformative power of affirmation. Even with varying relationships to organized religion, all respondents shared a sustained faith commitment and a desire to ethically engage scripture, which is shaped by resilience and a deep hope for transformation among the church. Significant people in the Bible, including Jesus, were described as white by missionaries and early users of the Bible. Thus, it is vital to recognize and expose Black heritage in the Bible and Christianity through preaching to expand self-esteem and win religious favor among members of the African American community. Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and the presence of Black people in the Bible will build a sense of belonging, while allowing infinite religious expression. Analysis of preaching Black presence in the Bible to build up self-esteem of African American congregations is the intent of this thesis. Can the comic spirit enliven preaching in these contexts? This is not just a theoretical question but a practical and pastoral one. A praxis for preaching with the comic spirit may be characterized by the intentional use of humor, levity, wit, and comedy to reveal theological insights. Sermons in LGBTQ+ affirming congregations can be more effective by utilizing expressions of the comic spirit that are informed by the respective contexts, with special interest given to the intersectional identities and lived experiences of queer listeners. The author, an openly queer ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, engages this topic as a self-examination of praxis and centers his research primarily within three Houston congregations. Before presenting findings, literary reviews include a queering of cishet scholarship in comic homiletics and an examination of queer theologians as cognate to further inform the contextualized praxis. Where cishet homileticians have studied stand-up comedians, the author bridges the queer research gap by exploring drag performers as muse. A four-part research approach—including surveys, focus groups, field observations, and interviews—serves to inform the developing praxis and prove the thesis: the comic spirit can enliven and enhance preaching in LGBTQ+ affirming contexts. Three homiletical strategies for a queer-informed comic spirit emerge from the project: (1) disarming tension to engage the listener, (2) fostering congregational connection, and (3) balancing depth and levity. It argues that what is often called “truth” is merely faith that has been absolutized and idolized, undermining critical reflection. Black women are the most abused group of people on social media today with violence specifically against Black women, Black Muslim women and Black trans women at an all-time high. Violence against these Black women is as a result of America’s desire to still define these persons as stereotypical Jezebels, Mammies and Sapphires, continuing what Dr. Emilie Townes calls “the cultural production of evil” through social media now. My primarily conversation partner, Dr. Na’im Akbar, suggests celebration is one strategy that breaks the chains of psychological slavery which negatively impacts African American people. With Dr. Akbar’s theory of celebration in mind, this paper examines how the act of celebration can be utilized as a spiritual care practice on social media today to care for Black women, Black Muslim women and Black trans women who experience violence on social media. Celebrating these Black women specifically restores dignity.
