Integral to the concept of radical Lutheranism is the inherent obligation for the church to be radically different from other mainline Protestant churches, and to be an active agent for social justice within American culture. This analysis takes a fresh look at Forde’s recommendations in today’s context. It suggests that the time is ripe for change in our current culture, that the ELCA is primed for change more than it was three decades after its formation, and that it can become a formidable change agent for our time as a role model for all mainline Protestant churches in America. Based on an understanding of key Lutheran doctrine, Forde outlined a theological approach to social justice that is even more relevant now than it was when he articulated his vision for a unique Lutheran church identity. Forde’s historically conservative approach to Lutheran social action is a contemporary guideline on how the ELCA can lead change efforts in our current environment."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/13286e99-1de2-409b-9d4e-2640d98a2dfd?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["13286e99-1de2-409b-9d4e-2640d98a2dfd"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["13286e99-1de2-409b-9d4e-2640d98a2dfd"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["randall.tyson@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1796528003158638592,"timestamp":"2024-04-16T21:23:35.317Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-08T22:36:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T16:19:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4da0b38c-9ddf-4789-982e-7b848fda8d5e","accessControl_ssim":["478800d6-1338-4c5e-96dd-a9009ba6760d"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["ad928024-fbe3-4ccb-a6d6-31047ffba74e"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["ad928024-fbe3-4ccb-a6d6-31047ffba74e"],"depositor_ssim":["muhammad.abduljami@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["muhammad.abduljami@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Adab and Artistry: Shaping the Future of African American Muslim Boys"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-08T22:36:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T16:19:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["68f0a1c8-5146-48bd-a76f-0bfc63767f86"],"hasLease_ssim":["a1bcd7db-b6ba-40fd-bb80-e72ddfb50dc8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Education"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Abdul-Jami, Muhammad"],"keyword_tesim":["Black American","Islamic education","Religious Education","Muslim Youth","African American ","Raising Muslims in America"],"subject_tesim":["African American Muslim Boys","Islamic Schools","Muslim Youth Development","Islamic Education","African Americans--Religion"],"abstract_tesim":["African-American Muslim adolescent males are at a pivotal juncture, facing unique challenges and opportunities within the rapidly evolving social, cultural, and technological landscapes of modern society. In this critical phase of their development, there is an urgent necessity for a hands-on, experiential approach to education that goes beyond traditional academic learning and religious training. This thesis posits that such an educational framework, deeply rooted in Islamic values and teachings, yet dynamically integrated with practical life skills and contemporary knowledge, is essential to effectively guide these young individuals. By emphasizing practical training, mentorship, and community engagement, this educational approach aims to foster the holistic growth of African-American Muslim teenage teens, empowering them to mature into well-rounded, confident, and competent Muslim men who can navigate the complexities of modern life while adhering to their faith and contributing positively to their communities and the broader world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/ad928024-fbe3-4ccb-a6d6-31047ffba74e?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["ad928024-fbe3-4ccb-a6d6-31047ffba74e"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["ad928024-fbe3-4ccb-a6d6-31047ffba74e"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["muhammad.abduljami@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836643335073169408,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T16:19:37.058Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-08T16:01:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-23T18:46:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fe49882e-8e69-4cd1-8188-d00f86d23989","accessControl_ssim":["3a092476-066e-46b4-b4b9-34ef543d224e"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["0155cee1-d5f3-4d4d-8fec-4440744fb680"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["0155cee1-d5f3-4d4d-8fec-4440744fb680"],"depositor_ssim":["edwin.greenlee@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["edwin.greenlee@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Paul Tillich and Barnett Newman: “An Imaginative Dialogue in the Theology Of Art”"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-08T16:01:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-23T18:46:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c26db4d7-85a7-4f27-9790-53ae58361d0f"],"hasLease_ssim":["fec6fe15-63ef-401c-92bf-c85934a083f3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Sacred Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Greenlee, Edwin J."],"keyword_tesim":["Method of Correlation","Theology","Abstract Expressionism","Theology of Art","Existentialism","Newman, Barnett","Tillich, Paul"],"subject_tesim":["Theology"],"abstract_tesim":["Tillich’s pioneering work in the theology of art offers an important way of doing theology in the modern era that resonates with contemporary Christians. While he explored visual art from a variety of historical periods, Tillich did not explore the major mid-twentieth century art movement called Abstract Expressionism. Tillich’s approach to the theology of art, particularly from a Christian existentialist perspective, works well with the paintings of a key Abstract Expressionist like Barnett Newman whose life and work paralleled that of Paul Tillich. Due to changes in the practices of contemporary painters such as producing written reflections on their own and their fellow artists’ work, today’s theologian of art needs to consider this additional material rather than a single visual work of art taken in isolation. Artists’ statements and writings, the writing of contemporary critics, as well as that of art historians present theologians an expanded body of material to investigate theologically. Finally, it considers the agricultural model of Muslim Spain as a blueprint for humanity to grow, thrive and live in harmony with the natural world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["1372297225"],"bibliographic_citation_tesim":["Majeed, Kori. \"Eco-Jihad : Roots, Principles, and Precedents of an Islamic Eco-Ethics.\" Masters thesis, Chicago Theological Seminary, 2022."],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/system/default_work_images/1/original/etd-icon_62058690__1_.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652370689261568,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:43:14.092Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-09-12T19:38:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:44:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a300ee2c-d168-4e7f-8f41-b585e681bc16","accessControl_ssim":["6c05ffc3-2c66-4a09-a312-b5528f261783"],"depositor_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Sa'id Nursī on resurrection and afterlife in comparison with Fakhr Al-Dīn Al-Rāzī"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-09-12T19:38:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:44:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["58dc48ac-0420-4fd5-b039-5ced04d82253"],"hasLease_ssim":["4752847a-f977-4ea7-91d5-5240d7e45292"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Demirkan, Ensar"],"subject_tesim":["Resurrection (Islam)","Rāzī, Fakhr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn ʻUmar, 1149 or 1150-1210","Nursi, Said, 1873-1960","God (Islam)--Attributes"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["As a 20th-century Sunnī Muslim scholar, the works of Sa'id Nursī have a e range of followers in Turkey for their powerful and unique approach to the articles of faith and the pillars of Islam. However, unfortunately, there is a lack of academic work comparing Nursī with the previous Muslim scholars and analyzing and comparing his argumentations. Therefore, this thesis focuses on Nursī's approach to proving the resurrection and the afterlife comparing him with Fakhr al-Dīn al-Raz̄i since Razī represented the sum of all previous Muslim argumentations in the subject. The result showed the Nursī combined his Sufi background employing the names and attributes of God to show the necessity of physical resurrection in a manner distinct from previous scholars. First, he established a universe in which the reader develops a personal relationship with the Creator through the names and attributes of Him. Then he argues why the disposition and ability of God require resurrection and afterlife for His servants. This approach is unique to Nursī, and this thesis aims to prove this claim."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["1372665340"],"bibliographic_citation_tesim":["Demirkan, Ensar. “Sa'id Nursī on Resurrection and Afterlife in Comparison with Fakhr Al-Dīn Al-Rāzī.” MA Thesis, Chicago Theological Seminary, 2022"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/system/default_work_images/1/original/etd-icon_62058690__1_.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652435337117696,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:44:15.746Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-09-03T21:32:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2023-09-15T02:01:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"111a8977-f7e7-4e61-9ef9-690ebfd45c88","accessControl_ssim":["1a240f6b-e127-4e7c-aec2-489bbd868fe5"],"depositor_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Be kind to sojourners: interconnections between anti-semitism, anti-immigration and white Christian nationalism since 9/11 "],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-09-03T21:32:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2023-09-15T02:01:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["83d90f32-8710-4dab-b35c-c6994e7e5832"],"hasLease_ssim":["561820d5-3a79-4820-b2ee-549cace7c71a"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Religious Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jenrette, Jerra "],"subject_tesim":["White nationalism","White supremacy movements--Religious aspects--Christianity","Antisemitism"],"abstract_tesim":["White Christian nationalism (WCN) as always been an under current in American society, at times it is more overt and others more covert. While its long history has indeed shaped our identity as a nation, there are those who desire that it be reasserted as the dominant force in developing our 21st century character. White Christian nationalists (WCN) seek to influence national leaders in declaring that this is a \"Christian nation,\" putting their religion above all others. Indeed, they argue this has always been the case but have concerns about the ways in which the numbers of their group(s) are dwindling. Since at least the 1950s, membership in the nation's leading Protestant denomination has been in gradual decline while attendance at all the other mainstream churches is waning. As a result of immigration, for which WCNs blame the Jews, demographics are shifting to the point of having an impact on the composition of the electorate. White Christian nationalists no longer hold sway over most voters, a change that has occurred since the early 1990s, and as a result they have sought someone to blame. Anti-Semitism has long been a part of Christian church history where Jews have been blamed for such events as The Bubonic Plague, Germany's defeat in World War I and its result, the Weimar Republic. With the increase of immigrants from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, WCNs have reacted against this expansion of the American Dream to anyone who is not white. And, who better to blame than the Jews who have reached out to humanity in efforts to \"repair the world\" by establishing organizations to help resettle refugees. Thus, the topic of this thesis is important today was WCN spreads and provides an opportunity to examine why white Christians believe they are superior to people of other races and religions and why they engage in acts of rhetorical and physical violence against those they believe deserve less. In fact, how can they believe themselves to be superior to any other group or individual if they believe in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth? This thesis will address these questions and more."],"rights_statement_tesim":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["1372584701"],"bibliographic_citation_tesim":["Jenrette, Jerra. \"Be Kind to Sojourners: Interconnections Between Anti-semitism, Anti-immigration and White Christian Nationalism Since 9/11.\" MA thesis, Chicago Theological Seminary, 2022"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/system/default_work_images/1/original/etd-icon_62058690__1_.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1778024149600436224,"timestamp":"2023-09-25T15:32:45.423Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-09-03T20:31:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T19:48:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a738b4b9-d3c6-4fae-a15f-5217662940a6","accessControl_ssim":["e84b92a1-4df4-4855-a56a-2e71ace3655a"],"depositor_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Prophetic preaching for social justice in the context of the young Korean generation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-09-03T20:31:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T19:48:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8f9ba21a-c88d-481d-a007-037a5cf8daca"],"hasLease_ssim":["b29f6544-05b5-40b3-9fe7-5e296d0fe8a2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
