Despite Fatima’s widely revered status, her life and contributions have often been overshadowed or misinterpreted, both by Western Orientalist scholarship and through the cultural practices of some Muslim societies. Through a detailed exploration of Fatima’s spiritual, social, and familial roles, this study reveals her as a powerful exemplar of female leadership, resilience, and piety. It addresses how Fatima’s life reshapes paradigms related to gender dynamics, social class, lineage, and race, offering a compelling model of female agency rooted in Islamic values. By highlighting Fatima’s education, public service, advocacy, and unwavering moral stance, the research demonstrates her enduring influence as a guiding figure for Muslim women today. This work seeks to provide a clearer framework within the Sunni tradition, empowering Muslim communities to recognize and reclaim the authentic representation of women’s roles and contributions in Islam, inspired by the legacy of Fatima bint Muhammad."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/8b25fd71-2800-48fa-a6a8-8c4be0a4fa9a?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["8b25fd71-2800-48fa-a6a8-8c4be0a4fa9a"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["8b25fd71-2800-48fa-a6a8-8c4be0a4fa9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["muslema.purmul@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1829681406368808960,"timestamp":"2025-04-17T20:02:44.459Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-07T14:42:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T16:25:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d24cf0a4-3692-4c6f-bf1a-9aae5c37c1a3","accessControl_ssim":["aab1a54a-ad07-4bbd-bd30-c1a779e34746"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["3763ae05-9617-4752-8005-1d17267be9df"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["3763ae05-9617-4752-8005-1d17267be9df"],"depositor_ssim":["andres.murillo@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["andres.murillo@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Fitrah as the Foundation for Addiction Recovery: A Taymiyyan Perspective on Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-07T14:42:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T16:25:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["63e953b6-8033-4a32-a4d4-cd09e955ae02"],"hasLease_ssim":["17d9b346-f8e3-4c03-bb59-c8fc70c7520f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Andres Murillo"],"keyword_tesim":["Philosophy","Addiction","Islamic theology","Ibn Taymiyyah","Islamic psychology","Materialism"],"subject_tesim":["Substance Abuse","Psychology and religion","Therapy (Psychotherapy)","Islam"],"abstract_tesim":["Mindfulness-based interventions, such as Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), have demonstrated efficacy in treating a range of mental health disorders, including addiction. Their secular framework, however, fails to address the holistic needs of Muslim populations. This study aims to map the theoretical framework for a religiously integrated relapse prevention model incorporating the psycho-spiritual insights of 14th-century polymath Ibn Taymiyyah, particularly his unique views on the fiṭrah and its role in cultivating experiential awareness (ma‘rifah). By analyzing areas of convergence and divergence between MBRP and Taymiyyan thought, this research reframes mindfulness not solely as a tool for psychological stability but as a pathway to restoring the corrupted fiṭrah for sustainable recovery. The integration of evidence-based cognitive behavioral strategies with Taymiyyan notions of God-centered mindfulness establishes a foundation for interventions that are both clinically effective and grounded in scripturalist Islamic scholarship. This approach holds particular promise for addressing substance use disorders in incarcerated Muslim populations, where Islamic frameworks have been shown to enhance coping mechanisms and support behavioral change.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/3763ae05-9617-4752-8005-1d17267be9df?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["3763ae05-9617-4752-8005-1d17267be9df"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["3763ae05-9617-4752-8005-1d17267be9df"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["andres.murillo@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836643700142243840,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T16:25:25.215Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-30T18:08:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T16:10:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9c00c157-a467-4476-aa20-015257736050","accessControl_ssim":["6ea669fb-be42-4e92-a3f5-76213c7b1657"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"depositor_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Khalifa Curriculum: Ethical Paradigms for the Renewal of Islamic Education "],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-30T18:08:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T16:10:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c4c4f287-5c05-4b8d-8346-e4111da838c1"],"hasLease_ssim":["4990f52e-be92-48e0-9627-f7d2e955174e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Education"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary "],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Peat, Derrick"],"keyword_tesim":["Education","Modernity","Liberation Theology","Colonialism"],"subject_tesim":["Education","Liberation theology","Islamic Pedagogy","Critical pedagogy","Ethical Philosophy","Paradigms"],"abstract_tesim":["What makes Islamic education “Islamic” in the modern context where secularism shapes identity formation? The scholars S.N. al-Attas, Wael Hallaq and Umar Farouq Abd-Allah have answered this question by stating that the principal essence of Islam is its ethico-moral system, which informs humanity of its identity as God’s moral subjects by instilling within them the prophetic ethic. Yet Islam’s identity formation, which is meant to protect the human fitra, i.e. the primordial human state, and is a foundation of its educational paradigm and ethical philosophy, is interrupted by the rise of the modern nation state through its refashioning of the human self and its use of secularism as a medium to make citizenship the primary principle of identity.1 This article contends that due to the traumatic social and psychological effects of the modern nation state and colonialism upon the Muslim collective consciousness and religious identity, restoration of Islamic education must take place through holistic means. Achieving the ethical aims of Islamic education must come through reclaiming the Islamic identity, rerooting its pedagogy in the Qur’anic worldview, reviving traditional spiritual orthopraxy and utilizing relevant psychological research to integrate contemporary psychological models aimed at identity development and healing. Restructuring Islamic curriculums ought to be a holistic enterprise that seeks to reformulate an “alchemy of happiness”2 that heals, edifies and informs the Muslim psyche - imbuing it with the traditional Islamic identity in a way that is therapeutic, relevant and reinvigorating."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836642747210006528,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T16:10:16.428Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T19:25:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:52:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d12cccc8-e0cd-4d81-a219-082595015bd2","accessControl_ssim":["08ddebe9-6f0f-4d14-b1c8-5ccd93202fb6"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff"],"depositor_ssim":["yasar.khan@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["yasar.khan@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Pedagogy of the Prophetic Biography in Modern Times: Effective Teaching of the Prophetic Biography in an Interdisciplinary Method"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-23T19:25:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:52:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["abf4bb4d-17bb-403e-a2b9-c51ef6b67075"],"hasLease_ssim":["94173476-3a6f-4541-ae77-7402244c5ce1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary "],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Khan, Yasar "],"subject_tesim":["Pedagogy"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis investigates the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to Prophetic Biography (Seerah) in modern sensibilities. First, it reviews the literature to investigate the role of Seerah in providing a framework for Muslims that can help them improve their personal, social, and ethical lives. Next, the research proposes various pedagogical approaches that can improve the teaching effectiveness and learning experience of the Prophetic Biography in contemporary contexts and settings. Moreover, the thesis supports a holistic approach to interdisciplinary learning by methodically addressing the various needs of different learners. The findings of the study suggest emphasizing the interconnected nature of integrating modern pedagogical methods, involving an interdisciplinary approach, and leveraging technology in teaching Prophetic Biography. This holistic approach can enhance educational practices, making the teachings more relevant, engaging, and accessible to a diverse and technology-driven student population. Offering a comprehensive and structured understanding of Seerah literature and incorporating an interdisciplinary (such as science, history, psychology, culture, languages, and relevant literature) perspective, such an approach can positively influence the discourse on Islamic education. Moreover, it carries a greater potential to provide students with a broad worldview, which can enhance their ability to apply the Prophet’s(PBUH) life in the current age."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasar.khan@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652967000801280,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:52:42.780Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T15:38:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:50:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"130ad8c6-4b5f-480e-a0a7-840beed40aa2","accessControl_ssim":["e6533bbb-7219-47b5-9d93-fa4345d73abc"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["497b3e31-2bee-427a-9bd2-ab3fd7204aaf"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["497b3e31-2bee-427a-9bd2-ab3fd7204aaf"],"depositor_ssim":["hedaiah.aishat@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["hedaiah.aishat@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Influence of Islamic-Based Parenting Practices in the Contemporary West on the Social and Emotional Development of Children"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-23T15:38:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:50:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0e9192fa-cfce-42b9-bcba-542f0946fdcc"],"hasLease_ssim":["92ed1024-0032-4121-b550-459e77ef7efa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Aishat, Hedaiah"],"keyword_tesim":["Effective Parenting","Parent-child relations","Islamic Parenting","Effective Child-Rearing","Sunnah-based child-rearing","Parenting","Islamic Child-rearing","Islamic Parenting in modern west","Child-Rearing","Child-rearing strategies"],"subject_tesim":["Religious education","Parent and child--Religious aspects","Islam","Religion and science"],"abstract_tesim":["This research project examines how Islamic-based parenting strategies are employed in the contemporary West, with an emphasis on how they impact children’s social and emotional growth. The integration of mizan into the environmental justice movement is suggested to foster fairness and equity among all beings, paving the way for a flourishing planet."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/473b5979-286e-46c5-bdc4-4b76e6ede518?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["473b5979-286e-46c5-bdc4-4b76e6ede518"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["473b5979-286e-46c5-bdc4-4b76e6ede518"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["nana.firman@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652713579905024,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:48:41.099Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T03:30:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:47:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f9e7d375-fe1a-47b2-8631-d1e95879ad51","accessControl_ssim":["4be77424-74c4-421a-b914-69394bc498b8"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"depositor_ssim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Black Belonging: Assessing Antiblackness in Full-time US Islamic Schools"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-23T03:30:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:47:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7a2b2c3b-ddbb-46aa-bc4a-7b77eb8941a2"],"hasLease_ssim":["eec41550-6a61-475e-992e-bc7a4ea22acd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Rukayat Yakub"],"subject_tesim":["Education","Belonging"],"abstract_tesim":["A sense of belonging is an essential part of youth development. Antiblackness, the inability to see Black humanity, is an undeveloped topic in Muslim spaces. In this thesis Black belonging is studied because despite Muslims having an identity construct that embraces all humanity, preliminary studies indicate that this construct is not actualized in Muslim schools. To understand this phenomenon and fill this research gap I conducted a mixed method study to understand alumni’s sense of belonging and what role antiblackness plays in their sense of belonging at U.S. Islamic schools. After describing the methodology, five themes are discussed: the deep sense belonging that Prophet Muhammad developed specifically around Black community members, the role antiblackness plays in and around us, the ease by which students use disparaging language around blackness, the inability to see Black American Muslim culture as a legitimate Muslim culture with history, norms, and traditions, and the importance of schools having an ummah embracing identity. The findings explored how hypervisibility and invisibility shaped how students experience school and their sense of belonging. To conclude, using Islamic sources and the data gathered six data-driven recommendations were made to help Muslim education leaders address antiblackness and develop a sense of belonging amongst Black students"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-EDU/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["9e3dec04-32c1-413a-a5a8-00611897a0a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["rukayat.yakub@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652645639520256,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:47:36.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T01:33:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:45:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"aa4978c1-5e9d-459d-9948-e57baa7068bf","accessControl_ssim":["8643f01a-724b-44bd-a46e-a4dce3ee7b71"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["1a8aaf77-5eff-4127-938d-84f35ee1b862"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["1a8aaf77-5eff-4127-938d-84f35ee1b862"],"depositor_ssim":["irum.maharaj@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["irum.maharaj@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Al-Zāhir wa Al-Bātin--The Manifest and the Hidden: A Response to J.
